Strep Throat

Strep Throat Treatment at Bayside Urgent Care

Strep throat is a contagious bacterial infection that affects the throat and tonsils and causes your throat to be sore and scratchy. While strep throat accounts for only a small percentage of sore throats, it can cause serious complications if left untreated. Strep throat is contagious through airborne droplets, contaminated surfaces, and shared food. Typically occurring between late fall and early spring, it is most common in school-aged children and teens.

At Bayside Urgent Care Center, we commonly diagnose and treat strep throat.

Located in Clearwater, Florida, we’re open seven days a week, Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 8 pm, and Saturday and Sunday, from 9 am to 6 pm. We’re always accepting new patients, and no appointments are necessary.

 What Causes a Sore Throat?

Most sore throats (also known as pharyngitis) are caused by viruses like the common cold or flu. In these instances, sore throats usually improve on their own.

A streptococcus bacterial infection can also cause sore throats. The resulting strep throat can be treated with antibiotics to prevent complications.

What are the Symptoms Strep Throat?

Strep throat tends to come on quickly and can cause some or all of the following symptoms:

  • Sore, scratchy throat
  • Pain when swallowing
  • Red and swollen tonsils
  • White patches, red dots, or pus on the back of the throat
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Rash
  • Body aches

 When Should I Get Tested?

If your sore throat has lasted longer than a few days, visit Bayside Urgent Care Center for a rapid strep test or throat culture.

 How Does the Test Work?

One of Bayside’s medical professionals will perform the rapid strep test by swabbing the back of your throat. The swab is then tested to see if the streptococcus bacteria is present. Because we use a rapid test, the results will be available while you wait.

 How Is Strep Throat Treated?

If we diagnose strep throat, we will prescribe an antibiotic regimen to help your body rid itself of the bacteria. It’s essential to finish your prescription, even if you start feeling better. After you’ve been medicated for 24 hours and no longer have a fever, you can return to work or school.

In addition to antibiotics, the following can also help alleviate pain and help you heal:

  •  Drink plenty of fluids
  •  Use a humidifier
  •  Drink warm liquids, such as herbal teas
  •  Get plenty of rest
  •  Take over-the-counter medication to reduce fever
  •  Gargle with warm saltwater
  •  Suck on throat lozenges
  •  Eat soft, cold foods

Does Bayside Urgent Care Accept Insurance?

Yes. We accept several major insurance carriersincluding Medicare. If you are underinsured, uninsured, or prefer to pay out-of-pocket, we accept payment at the time of service. We also offer flexible and affordable payment plans.
