Sports Physicals

Playing It Safe with a Sports Physical

If your child is an athlete and participates in sports during school or camps or with a sporting association, they likely need to get a sports physical to make sure they can safely play.

With no appointments necessary and walk-ins welcome, Bayside Urgent Care Center in Clearwater, Florida, makes getting a sports physical easy. Typically, we can get you and your child in and out in less than 1 hour.

Why Do Organizations Require a Sports Physical?

While specific requirements may vary depending upon the organization, a sports physical is an opportunity for a medical professional to review your child’s complete health history, check their current health, and discuss any concerns.

At Bayside Urgent Care Center, our sports physical:

● Determines good health

● Measures physical fitness and a body’s maturity

● Documents past and present injuries

● Finds conditions that may cause injury

One main goal of a sports physical is to advise how your child can protect themselves from injury and how to play safely if they have a chronic illness (like asthma) or medical condition.

Besides requiring a sports physical before the season begins, a school or sporting organization may need one before your child returns to play after an injury like a broken bone or concussion.

What You Can Expect from a Sports Physical

A sports physical at Bayside Urgent Care Center has two main parts. The first is a medical history where we will talk about past/current injuries, illnesses, and problems that may make injury (or re-injury) more likely. Following the history, is the physical examination where we will check:

● Height and weight

● Vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration)

● Eyes (vision), ears, nose, and throat

● Heart, lungs, abdomen

● Joints, flexibility, and strength

When Should You Schedule a Sports Physical?

We recommend coming in for a sports physical about 6 weeks before the season begins. By doing so, you give yourself time to follow-up on any concerns that need addressing.

If sports are starting sooner than 6 weeks, come in today, and a Bayside Urgent Care medical professional will perform the examination.

What to Bring When You Visit Bayside Urgent Care Center

Be sure to bring your school’s or program’s required documentation, including a sports physical form, immunization records, vaccine cards, and waivers.

Also, bring a list of any past illnesses, injuries, surgeries, or any other conditions.

Are a Sports Physical and an Annual Physical the Same?

No. A sports physical does not take the place of regular medical care or annual exams. A sports physical focuses on your child’s well-being as it relates to playing a sport and is specific about athletic issues. A regular physical is more in-depth and addresses overall well-being, which may include some things related to sports.

Does Bayside Urgent Care Accept Insurance?

Yes. We accept several major insurance carriers. However insurance cannot be used for physicals at an urgent care center. For that reason our sports physicals are reasonably priced at $10.
